🇩🇪🇯🇵 Keio University Co-Hosts DWIH Tokyo Symposium

Earlier this month, Keio University and the University of Cologne co-hosted a symposium organized by the German Center for Research and Innovation in Tokyo (DWIH Tokyo).

The event, which focused on innovations for aging populations, brought together experts from academia, government, and industry in both Germany and Japan. Participants included Professor Joybrato Mukherjee, president of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and rector of the University of Cologne, as well as President Kohei Itoh and Vice-President Motohiro Tsuchiya from Keio University.

Topics discussed included work being carried out at the Center for Supercentenarian Medical Research at Keio University's School of Medicine, international collaborative strategies, solutions, policies, and research on how to address health concerns for super-aged societies.

🏕️📚 X-Ship Global Survival Camp 2025

Earlier this summer, Keio held its annual X-Ship Global Survival Camp at a lodge located in Yamanakako, a small lakeside village at the base of Mt. Fuji in Yamanashi Prefecture.

The goal of the camp is to nurture various “X-ship qualities,” such as friendship, leadership, fellowship, and ownership, that form the foundation of Keio’s mission to raise up leaders and luminaries.

Students were sorted into “houses” to take on challenges—each house consisting of 4 elementary school students, 2 junior / senior high school students, and 3 undergraduate / graduate / international students.

Over the course of the three-day camp, participants worked together to set up tents and campfires, cook, and engage in various workshops that taught survival skills like laying emergency tarps and Morse code.

🔬🧪 Empowering Girls in STEM at Keio Science and Technology

“The world is calling for DEI, and research is no different. When people of diverse backgrounds come together, new discoveries and ideas emerge. In that sense, women in STEM can make major contributions to the advancement of science and technology in Japan and globally.”

In August, the Faculty of Science and Technology hosted Girls Meet STEM at Keio Science and Technology 2025 at Yagami Campus, an event organized for girls in junior and high school.

Participants joined a tour that started at the Yagami Innovation Laboratory (YIL), where they learned about the history, ethos, and activities of the undergraduate faculty. They then broke into smaller groups for student-led tours, visiting labs housing atomic force microscopes, quantum computers, robotics studios, and more.

Following the tour, participants sat with current students of diverse backgrounds, who shared and answered questions about their experiences of studying STEM at Keio.

🧑‍🦽 Boccia Tournament at Yagami Campus

“The children’s smiles instantly opened our hearts. Normally, you’d never imagine faculty and students high-fiving each other like that. But when someone with a disability is part of the group, it seems to make it easier for everyone to express their empathy openly.”

In August, under clear summer skies, the Boccia Tournament 2025 was held at Yagami Campus. The event invites children who use wheelchairs, their parents, as well as Keio students, faculty, and staff, to come together to play parasports.

The event was organized by the KeiDGs Working Group (a DEI committee), the nonprofit organization ZEN (which works to empower children with disabilities), and GO BEYOND (a student group at Sophia University that promotes parasports).

Boccia is a game similar to curling in which two teams take turns throwing six balls toward a white target (the jack). An official Paralympic sport, Boccia is accessible to people of all ages, regardless of physical strength or disability.

The tournament was followed by a campus tour and a commemorative photo in front of the Vision Wall, a mural depicting a futuristic, more inclusive campus, capping off a day of fun activities that deepened mutual understanding.
