🚒 Shinanomachi Community Disaster Drill

Last month, the 2025 Shinanomachi Community Disaster Drill was held outside of the Keio University Hospital. The disaster drill is conducted annually with the help of firefighters from the Yotsuya Fire Station to bring the community together and make Shinanomachi a more safe and secure place to live.

This year’s drill focused on teaching first responders and local groups how to mobilize in the immediate aftermath of a major earthquake in Tokyo. Activities included exercises scaling ladders and putting out fires for Shinanomachi Campus firefighters, triage simulations for doctors and nurses, and distributing meals for community members.

The event, which saw a total of 280 participants, was a valuable opportunity to brush up on these important skills and restore a sense of appreciation for the human connections that protect a community in times of need.

🏫 Humanities at Risk? Seminar by Keio University and Yonsei University

Earlier this month, Keio University and Yonsei University held a joint public seminar at the Global Research Lab (G-Lab) in the East Research Building on Keio’s Mita Campus.

The seminar’s theme was “Humanities at Risk?” and featured discussions from experts in disciplines related to the humanities on the need to redefine what makes us “human” in the age of AI, the challenges facing universities in their educational and research roles as they train the next generation of professionals, and the future of higher education.

Keio University President Kohei Itoh and Yonsei University President Dong-Sup Yoon gave opening remarks, followed by a keynote speech by Professor Noriyuki Harada, dean of the Graduate School of Letters at Keio University.

The event also featured a panel discussion with Yonsei University's Professor Hye Joon Yoon from the Department of English and Associate Professor Nam Ju Kim from the Department of Education, as well as Keio University's Professor Satoko Tokunaga from the Faculty of Letters and Professor Akira Ishii from the Faculty of Economics.

🏹🎯 Archery Team Competes at Kanto Field Championship

A look back at the 2025 Kanto Student Archery Field Individual Tournament at the Hana no Yama Field Archery Range.

Over the three-day competition, a total of 14 students from the Keio Archery Team participated. While this competition showcased a non-standard form of archery, it provided an opportunity to practice going up against top archers from across the Kanto region in a unique setting.

🌏✨ VP Tsuchiya Attends APRU Senior International Leaders’ Meeting

Last month, Keio University Vice-President Motohiro Tsuchiya attended the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) Senior International Leaders’ Meeting, held at Ecuador’s Universidad San Francisco de Quito.

More than 30 senior university international affairs leaders from 11 countries and regions gathered to discuss topics such as “Reimagining Global Engagement,” “Enhancing Trans-Pacific Cohesion,” and “Creating Impact for Tomorrow.”

Over the two-day event, VP Tsuchiya sat down with other leaders to explore perspectives and strategies to further accelerate the internationalization of higher education.

In addition, a ceremony was held to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the Asia Pacific Women in Leadership (APWiL), one of APRU’s flagship programs aimed at fostering the next generation of women leaders in the region.
