🇯🇵 🇬🇧 Vice-President Tsuchiya Meets with the Rt Hon Baroness Smith of Malvern, the UK Minister for Skills and Minister for Women and Equalities

On July 30, Keio University’s Vice-President Motohiro Tsuchiya attended the UK-Japan Education Mission Reception held at the British ambassador’s residence.

Vice-President Tsuchiya serves as the co-chair, representing Japanese universities that are members of RENKEI, a consortium of Japanese and British universities.

Before the reception, he met with the Rt Hon Baroness Smith of Malvern, the UK Minister for Skills and Minister for Women and Equalities, and Jim Booth OBE, Director of the British Council, to discuss future study abroad and cross-disciplinary research opportunities between British and Japanese universities.

“I asked myself what I truly wanted to do, what I could devote my whole heart to, and the answer was clear: I wanted to keep fencing. It wasn’t a decision made out of despair after failing to qualify. I chose, with a clear mind, to return to my original dream of competing as an Olympic athlete.”

Karin Miyawaki graduated from the Faculty of Economics in 2019. She began fencing at the age of five, winning a national championship in fourth grade before going on to compete internationally throughout junior high school and beyond.

She first set her sights on competing at the Olympics when she was a student at Keio Girls Senior High School. Though she missed selection for the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2021 Olympics, she was chosen for both the individual and team events at Paris 2024, earning Japan’s first women’s Olympic medal in fencing.

Now affiliated with Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, she continues to travel the world, training and competing toward her goal of winning gold at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

🏫Summer Break Begins! 🏫

From tomorrow, Keio’s Mita, Yagami, Shonan Fujisawa, and Shiba-Kyoritsu Campuses will be closed for summer break. They will resume regular operation from Tuesday, August 19. Hiyoshi Campus will have its summer break from August 21–27.

Please note that we will not be able to respond to inquiries during these periods.

🔬Asia’s First International Tardigrada Symposium

The 16th International Symposium on Tardigrada, a triennial conference that brings together leading researchers on the tiny animals (often referred to as “water bears”), was held in Japan last month, marking the first time the conference has visited Asia since its inception in Italy in 1974.

120 researchers from 27 countries gathered at the Tsuruoka Metabolome Campus to share their research. The program featured 4 keynote lectures, 57 oral presentations, and 61 conference poster presentations, showcasing cutting-edge research on spanning morphology, ecology, molecular biology, and genomics.

Beyond academics, participants were given a tour of local hotspots by high school students, sampled food from the region, and visited Keio labs and other research facilities in the area.
