Today is a university holiday to celebrate the anniversary of Keio founder Yukichi Fukuzawa’s birthday, who was born 190 years ago on this day.
Fukuzawa was born on the twelfth day of the twelfth month in the fifth year of the Tenpo era, which equates to January 10, 1835. Ten years after his passing, the Fukuzawa family began celebrating Yukichi Fukuzawa’s birthday, and many Mita-kai (organizations of jukuin, or Keio alumni) around the country soon followed suit, holding gatherings in his memory.
Until then it was custom for jukuin (Keio Alumni) to gather on February 3, the anniversary of Fukuzawa’s death, to talk of their memories with him and visit his grave. However, opinions were voiced as to whether it was appropriate to continue lamenting his death year after year, and so it was decided that Keio should follow the example set by the Fukuzawa family who survived him. Ever since, Keio University has celebrated his birthday on January 10.

The Cement Project, developed by researchers at Ke

The Cement Project, developed by researchers at Keio University Graduate School of Media Design SAMCARA lab, has received the Excellent Award at the Good Design New Hope Award 2024.

The Cement Project aims to address challenges specific to concrete such as gravel shortage, low functionality of architectural spaces, and environmental impact. The project focuses on developing and mass-producing zero greenhouse gas emission building materials.

The judges highly praised the project’s extensive efforts to explore solutions to issues like the scarcity of high-quality sand and high CO2 emissions during concrete production. Despite the complex nature of material development, the project’s simple equation of “concrete = waste + water” effectively demonstrates the material’s practicality and potential. While not yet fully completed, the project shows great promise for continued research and development in this important area.
