🌍🤝 NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte Visits Keio University

Keio University was honored to welcome NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to Mita Campus on April 9 for a speech and dialogue with students.
Following opening remarks by Vice-President Motohiro Tsuchiya, Secretary General Rutte delivered a speech titled “NATO and Japan – Strong Partnerships in an Interconnected World.”

In his address, he posited that today’s security challenges require collaborative approaches, and stressed the importance of maintaining peace, not merely securing it. He also highlighted the potential for NATO-Japan cooperation in technology and innovation to protect shared values and contribute to global stability.

The event concluded with a lively dialogue with students moderated by Professor Hosoya, which explored topics such as the conflict in Ukraine, international security strategies, and Japan’s evolving global role.

📖✨ Keio’s “Lunyu shu” Manuscript Awarded National Treasure Status ✨📖

A rare manuscript in Keio’s collection–the “Lunyu shu” (論語疏; Elucidation of the Analects), an annotation of the “Analects” by Six Dynasties Scholar Huang Kan 皇侃 (488–545) of the Liang dynasty–was recently designated a national treasure by the Japan Agency for Cultural Affairs.

“Lunyu shu”, colloquially known as the “Sayings of Confucius”, is believed to be the oldest transmitted manuscript of the “Analects” produced in China. The manuscript made its way to Japan in the pre-Heian period (before 794) and has been handed down for centuries. Its whereabouts were unknown for a long time, but was recently rediscovered and acquired by the Keio University Library.

Now officially an “Important Cultural Property (Arts and Crafts)”, the manuscript stands out in Keio’s extensive collection of over 10,000 rare books and materials, which are made available to researchers in our Rare Book Room on Mita Campus, and to the general public during regular exhibitions with Maruzen.

🚣Waseda-Keio Regatta on the Sumida River! 🚣

Last month, the Keio and Waseda rowing clubs battled it out on the Sumida River in a series of races. Leading up to the event, Nakamise Shopping Street in Asakusa was decorated with special Waseda-Keio Regatta themed decorations to build excitement.

The longest of the races covered an impressive distance of 3750m. Despite the rainy weather, the spectator stands were united in cheering on the teams as the rowers displayed their powerful and gallant form.

Congratulations to all the athletes on their hard work and dedication!

“Even as a child, I was captivated by the Tokyo Big6 Baseball games at Jingu Stadium.”

Ryuta Hirose, a recent graduate of the Faculty of Business and Commerce began his baseball journey in the first grade at Keio Yochisha Elementary. His dreams of going pro would eventually come true when he was drafted as the third pick by the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks in the 2023 Nippon Professional Baseball Draft.
