🌐 Keio and SOAS Hold Digital Humanities Symposium

Earlier this month, Keio University and SOAS held a symposium titled "Digital Humanities in Global Context: Critical Approaches to Data, Archives, and Identity" at Mita Campus.

Throughout the day, researchers, graduate students, and faculty members from Keio, SOAS, and other institutions delivered a series of presentations exploring topics including the potential of digital humanities, the role of digital humanities in the future, and relevant developments in both Japan and abroad.

🏫 714th Mita Public Speaking Event

Late last year, Professor Naoko Nishizawa gave a speech for Keio University’s time-honored Mita Public Speaking Event. Held, as usual, at the historic Mita Public Speaking Hall (Mita Enzetsu-kan), the speech marked the 714th installation in the series.

In her lecture, titled “Tokujiro Obata―Man of Wisdom, Man of Daring,” Prof. Nishizawa detailed the life and achievements of Tokujiro Obata, one of Keio founder Yukichi Fukuzawa’s closest associates, discussing Obata’s role in the establishment of the Mita Public Speaking Event, his contributions as a scholar, and his advocacy of learning for all, regardless of social class.

🎾 Keio Challenger Tournament at Hiyoshi

Late last year, tennis players from across the globe competed in the 2025 Keio Challenger Tournament (official name: Yokohama Keio Challenger International Tennis Tournament 2025 supported by Mita Kosan). It is the sole ATP Challenger Tour in the world hosted by a university and run by students.

The competition was steeper than ever, including professional tennis stars Kei Nishikori, the top seed in the men’s singles tournament, and Rei Sakamoto, the second seed. Over 6,000 spectators bore witness to this thrilling star-studded contest.

Throughout the tournament, students also ran the Junior Tennis School, tennis events for adults, and a wheelchair tennis event. The competition proved to be a valuable learning experience for students on the Keio Tennis Team, who were tasked with running the international tournament.

🌏🔬 SDGs and Science Symposium at Hiyoshi

Late last year, the Research and Education Center for Natural Sciences held a symposium titled “Let’s Discuss and Think About the SDGs and Science!” in the Raiosha’s Symposium Space on Hiyoshi Campus.

With the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) target of 2030 rapidly approaching, the event invited four leading figures in relevant fields to discuss progress toward their completion, actions currently being undertaken, and the science and technology needed to support these efforts.

The speakers were Professor Ayumi Onuma from the Keio University Faculty of Economics, J Leaf Corporation President Jun Uehara, Kenichi Imagawa from the Chiyoda Corporation’s Research and Development Center, and Naohiro Uyama from the Shimizu Corporation’s Emerging Frontiers Division.

Presentations covered a wide range of topics, including the process of establishing new technologies and products in the marketplace, sustainable food procurement, the viability of hydrogen as an energy source, and an initiative to generate solar power on the moon’s surface.
