📚✨ Novelist Reisuke Kaneko Shares Journey to Literary Success

Reisuke Kaneko graduated from the Faculty of Business and Commerce in 2016. After years of trying and failing to break into the literary world, his 2023 novel, Dead Yamada and His Classroom, won the prestigious Mephisto Prize, establishing him as one of Japan’s most promising new authors.

🌏♻️ SDGs Conference 2025 Summer Camp at Hiyoshi

Keio University held its fourth annual SDGs Conference 2025 Summer Camp late last month on Hiyoshi Campus, bringing together approximately 60 students from elementary through undergraduate level to discuss Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their vision for the school’s future in 2050.

The Summer Camp featured various lectures, including President Kohei Itoh’s address on peace in relation to SDGs Goal 16, and Professor and Student Conference Supervisor Norichika Kanie’s presentation on climate change.

Students joined small group discussions to discuss the environment, society, economy, and partnerships, and proposed unique solutions such as an environmental point system, on-campus business revitalization, and enhanced support for international students.

This unprecedented program provides a pathway for students to start thinking about these critical issues early in their academic journeys.

🧪✨ Keio University Hosts 37th Science Cafe

The Research and Education Center for Natural Sciences at Keio University hosted its 37th Science Cafe on July 26 at Hiyoshi Campus. 32 participants, including elementary students in the third grade and older, explored microbial respiration through an interactive workshop.

Students created artificial salmon roe spheres using sodium alginate from seaweed and other ingredients, then injected the spheres with yeast to observe alcoholic fermentation. As yeast respiration produced bubbles, the artificial roe floated to the surface, demonstrating how microorganisms need to eat and breathe to survive.

The hands-on format led to enthusiastic questions and comments from students. Many commented afterwards that they thought science was fun and wanted to learn more at future events.
