Congratulations to the Keio Equestrian Team for their outstanding performance at the 76th Kanto Student Equestrian Competition this summer.

Individual Results:

🧪✨ Keio University Hosts 37th Science Cafe

The Research and Education Center for Natural Sciences at Keio University hosted its 37th Science Cafe on July 26 at Hiyoshi Campus. 32 participants, including elementary students in the third grade and older, explored microbial respiration through an interactive workshop.

Students created artificial salmon roe spheres using sodium alginate from seaweed and other ingredients, then injected the spheres with yeast to observe alcoholic fermentation. As yeast respiration produced bubbles, the artificial roe floated to the surface, demonstrating how microorganisms need to eat and breathe to survive.

The hands-on format led to enthusiastic questions and comments from students. Many commented afterwards that they thought science was fun and wanted to learn more at future events.

🇯🇵 🇬🇧 Vice-President Tsuchiya Meets with the Rt Hon Baroness Smith of Malvern, the UK Minister for Skills and Minister for Women and Equalities

On July 30, Keio University’s Vice-President Motohiro Tsuchiya attended the UK-Japan Education Mission Reception held at the British ambassador’s residence.

Vice-President Tsuchiya serves as the co-chair, representing Japanese universities that are members of RENKEI, a consortium of Japanese and British universities.

Before the reception, he met with the Rt Hon Baroness Smith of Malvern, the UK Minister for Skills and Minister for Women and Equalities, and Jim Booth OBE, Director of the British Council, to discuss future study abroad and cross-disciplinary research opportunities between British and Japanese universities.

“I asked myself what I truly wanted to do, what I could devote my whole heart to, and the answer was clear: I wanted to keep fencing. It wasn’t a decision made out of despair after failing to qualify. I chose, with a clear mind, to return to my original dream of competing as an Olympic athlete.”

Karin Miyawaki graduated from the Faculty of Economics in 2019. She began fencing at the age of five, winning a national championship in fourth grade before going on to compete internationally throughout junior high school and beyond.

She first set her sights on competing at the Olympics when she was a student at Keio Girls Senior High School. Though she missed selection for the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2021 Olympics, she was chosen for both the individual and team events at Paris 2024, earning Japan’s first women’s Olympic medal in fencing.

Now affiliated with Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, she continues to travel the world, training and competing toward her goal of winning gold at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
