Takahashi graduated from Keio University’s Department of Political Science in the Faculty of Law in 1998. After a record-breaking run at the Keio Baseball Club, he went on to play and coach professional baseball, and continues to enjoy an active career in commentating.

🏅🔬 Award Ceremony for the 30th Keio Medical Science Prize

Congratulations to Dr. Akiko Iwasaki and Dr. Clifford Paul Brangwynne on being awarded the 30th Keio Medical Science Prize!

The ceremony was held at Kitasato Hall on Shinanomachi Campus, where the two recipients were presented medals, certificates, and a record of their monetary awards, followed by individual lectures on the research that led to their selection.

Dr. Akiko Iwasaki, a Sterling Professor of Immunobiology and Professor of Dermatology and of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology at Yale School of Medicine, was selected for her work on “Advancing Understanding of Human Immunity to COVID-19.” Dr. Clifford Paul Brangwynne, June K. Wu '92 Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Princeton University, was selected for his research on the “Discovery of Liquid–Liquid Phase Separation in Cells.

Since its establishment in 1996, the prize has been bestowed upon researchers who have outstanding and creative achievements in medicine and the life sciences. It is the only prize of its kind awarded by a Japanese university. To date, 13 recipients have gone on to become Nobel laureates.

At the ceremony, the recipients reflected on their research journeys, expressed their joy in receiving the award, and offered sincere thanks to those who had supported them throughout their careers.

🚒 Shinanomachi Community Disaster Drill

Last month, the 2025 Shinanomachi Community Disaster Drill was held outside of the Keio University Hospital. The disaster drill is conducted annually with the help of firefighters from the Yotsuya Fire Station to bring the community together and make Shinanomachi a more safe and secure place to live.

This year’s drill focused on teaching first responders and local groups how to mobilize in the immediate aftermath of a major earthquake in Tokyo. Activities included exercises scaling ladders and putting out fires for Shinanomachi Campus firefighters, triage simulations for doctors and nurses, and distributing meals for community members.

The event, which saw a total of 280 participants, was a valuable opportunity to brush up on these important skills and restore a sense of appreciation for the human connections that protect a community in times of need.
