Keio University, TEPCO Energy Partner, Inc. (hereinafter "TEPCO EP"), and Japan Facility Solutions, Inc. (hereinafter "JFS") concluded a basic agreement on April 11, 2024, regarding the implementation of energy services for solar power generation facilities (hereinafter "solar power generation services") at the Keio University Shonan Fujisawa Campus (SFC).
To transition its electricity consumption to renewable energy, Keio University solicited proposals for a PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) provider to install solar power generation facilities at SFC. After receiving and evaluating proposals from multiple providers, it has selected the TEPCO Group as the PPA provider.
Based on this, discussions will begin on a plan to install solar power generation facilities (expected capacity: approx. 590 kW) at SFC, utilizing services provided by JFS. Specifically, the plan is to conduct detailed design in fiscal 2024, with installation of the solar power generation facilities and the start of operations scheduled for fiscal 2025 or later. During the detailed design phase, the installation of storage batteries and fast chargers for electric vehicles will also be considered to further enhance the effective use of solar power.
Through this initiative, approximately 650,000 kWh, equivalent to about 15% of the annual electricity consumption at SFC (and the annual electricity consumption of about 200 average households), will be supplied by renewable energy, and an annual reduction of approximately 247 tons of CO₂ emissions is expected.
Until now, there have been few cases in Japan of large-capacity solar power generation facilities being installed on the rooftops of school facilities where buildings are scattered across a vast campus. Furthermore, going beyond simple equipment installation to also consider the effective use of environmental value from surplus electricity and the transition to 100% renewable energy for all electricity used at SFC represents a pioneering initiative for carbon neutrality at an educational institution.
This initiative will be promoted as one of the efforts under the "Partnership Agreement for Achieving Carbon Neutrality at Keio University" (hereinafter the "CN Partnership Agreement"), concluded between Keio University and TEPCO Holdings, Inc. (hereinafter "TEPCO HD") on November 8, 2022.
