Research Overview

The role of simulation in supporting manufacturing continues to expand, and increasingly advanced and accurate analyses are required. Our work focuses on the interface between microscopic material structure and macroscopic deformation behaviour. We have developed our own crystal plasticity analysis method that resolves, rather than averages, the discrete information of which slip systems are active, together with an elasto-plastic analysis method that detects deformation localisation as a bifurcation phenomenon, with the aim of predicting material limits without relying on empirical fitting. We also reduce high-fidelity physical analyses into lightweight surrogate models through machine learning and combine them with optimisation methods to support design decisions, contributing to the design of next-generation mechanical structural systems.
